Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME)
POME is a waste product generated during the milling process of palm oil. It contains residual oil, organic matter, and other impurities. The high organic content and availability in large quantities make POME a viable feedstock for biodiesel production. Key points regarding POME include:
1. Pretreatment: POME requires pretreatment to recover residual oil, which can then be used for biodiesel production. This process typically involves methods like centrifugation, filtration, and chemical treatments to separate oil from the effluent.
2. Transesterification: The recovered oil from POME undergoes transesterification, a chemical process where triglycerides react with methanol or ethanol in the presence of a catalyst to produce biodiesel and glycerol. Supercritical transesterification, which does not require a catalyst, has been highlighted for its higher reaction rates and simpler product separation.
3. Optimization: To maximize biodiesel yield from POME, optimization of the transesterification parameters such as temperature, reaction time, and molar ratio of alcohol to oil is essential.
Palm Fatty Acid Distillate (PFAD)
PFAD is a by-product obtained during the refining of crude palm oil. It is rich in free fatty acids (FFAs) and is considered a low-cost feedstock for biodiesel production. Key points regarding PFAD include:
